The longest word.
The clever ones hide the chalks at a certain place, he said.
"How thankful are we for the fluorescence! I for one, wouldn't want my hands charred
every time I reach for the hidden chalk" I whispered to her -- received a blank stare.
And a bench apart, you smiled knowingly.
I don't know why, but in sharing that foolish little triumph of having solved the two penny mystery of the chalk-on-the-tube light, I felt the two of us to be extraordinarily clever.
(Well, me more so. I had come up with the witty remark.)
(Uh..no, actually it was you. For being able to keep your mouth shut and enjoying the discovery secretly.)
(And I admit, it wasn't that witty either. More of nerdy, I guess.)

Those swift glances at each other to see how the other is appreciating the professor's wisecracks. Coming up with a PGW-style scale for the degree of amusement: one-eighth of an inch of smile, one-fourth, and so on.
And now so long, goodbye! I've gotta fill my head with more important things like ferroelectric perovskites right now. Hope to see that smile en route sometimes. Although..it's already en coeur.
